Our Parish

For more than a century, St. Elia Albanian Orthodox Church has been a home for Orthodox Christian worship in Jamestown, New York. Generations of families have prayed, celebrated, and grieved within these walls, and the parish they built continues to welcome all who seek God.

We believe the Orthodox Church is the Church founded by Jesus Christ and described throughout the New Testament. The word Orthodox comes from the Greek "orthos" (correct) and "doxa" (teaching or glory), and right worship is at the heart of who we are: praise, thanksgiving, and glory offered to God together, as one body.

The center of that worship is the Eucharist, a word that means "thanksgiving." In it we mystically partake of Christ's body and blood and receive His life and strength. Christians have celebrated the Eucharist since the Church's very beginning; the earliest believers called it "the medicine of immortality" because of the grace of God they received in it.

A parish, like anything of value, grows with the love poured into it. We reap what we sow, and the more we give of ourselves in involvement, commitment, and prayer, the richer our common life becomes.

Wherever you are on your journey, there is a place for you at St. Elia. Divine Liturgies are held twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 11:00 AM by Father John P. Hutnyan of Cheektowaga, NY and are in English. Following Liturgies, coffee hours are held in the church hall, all are welcome.

What we are is God's gift to us. What we become is our gift to God.
